This Skillful Rescue of a Doe on Ice Will Make You Laugh, Smile, and Maybe Applaud

Doe ran from coyotes onto the ice and then got stuck there.

A deer in Simsbury, Connecticut apparently fled from some coyotes onto the frozen Farmington River.

But while she got away from the predators, she found herself in another predicament altogether—one that only some determined humans could get her out of.

Luckily for this doe, animal control and the police were able to work together and mount an effective rescue of the animal. Not surprisingly, she was completely exhausted and didn't even have the energy to run after such an ordeal.

But after resting a while, she was able to get up and walk off without incident.

As the dead of winter sets in, wildlife authorities around the country will be responding to more and more of these calls of deer, elk and even moose who simply aren't built for walking on the slippery surfaces of frozen water. There have been a few such rescues already this season.

Thankfully, this story has a happy ending, and the doe will live to see another day. Kudos especially to Katelyn Stryeski, the animal care manager who went out onto the ice to save this deer's life.
