According to police, 62-year-old Regis Levasseur was hunting in the Forest of Compiegne, only 50 miles from Paris. He was acting as a "beater," which is someone who moves wild game during a hunt. He was unarmed when the deer decide to charge him.
"Normally the animal would flee but this time he decided to charge," Guy Harlé, president of the local hunters' federation told The Local. "It came after him."
The stag's antlers pierced Levasseur, causing internal bleeding and ultimately killing him. The French hunter was reportedly due to get married in the following months.
"The antlers of the stag are like many knives piercing you, there is nothing you can do," Harlé said. "This tragic accident reminds us that we do not play with a wild animal. There is an inherent risk with hunting."
