This deer is a few fries short of a Happy Meal.
Here's something we never thought we'd see: deer going carnivore! Perhaps after years of watching wolves, foxes, coyote, and bobcats get the better end of the food chain deal, this deer got fed up and tried branching out to new dietary pastures.
Whatever the cause for this deer to suddenly decide to eat a bird, we're lucky it was caught on video by YouTube user Linda Ford for all the world to see. Because we might have a hard time believing it otherwise.
Note all the birds swooping at the deer's head early in the video. It appears they are trying to protect either a baby bird, or one that is injured. Either way, it cannot fly and there is no escape once the buck decides to make this bird a snack.
The buck did not even hesitate. He picked that bird up and down it went into the deer's gullet. Definitely not something one sees every day. In the video's description, there was a little more detail on what happened.
"This buck doesn't know he is supposed to be a vegetarian! Birds were flying in and running into the head of this young buck in our front yard. I was watching through the window, and I didn't know why the birds were attacking him," Ford wrote. "Then, I saw the little bird on the ground."
As unusual as this incident was, it is also not unheard of. It is rare, but deer have been observed eating birds and small mammals many times in the past. In at least one experiment studying the decay of human remains, a deer was recorded on trail camera chewing on the ribs of a human left in the forest. We are not sure how often this sort of thing happens, so it is a good thing she had the camera rolling to capture this moment for the whole world to see!
