A town announced yesterday that effective immediately dogs will be required to wear canine diapers in public spaces! Many complaints were filed about dog poop in city parks and specially-designed diapers will be available for purchase from supermarkets in early June.
The NZ Herald interviewed the city council and everyone from the city services director to community members complained that they tried to educate the city's dog-owning public to carry plastic bags and pick up their dog's droppings.
"This seems to have fallen on deaf ears."
Well, Happy April Fools' Day!
This is not true and we're happy to report that dog diapers are being used for seniors and dogs recovering from surgery (not in public places) only! We also learned that in New Zealand, they also call diapers "nappies" which is adorable.
Meet Dana Brewington, an entrepreneur that brought disposable diapers to pet owners and the need is very real and not at all an April Fools' joke.
The premium disposable dog diaper was invented by Dana Brewington, the founder of Do-Rites Premium Disposable Dog Diapers. Many pet owners with dogs that are paralyzed and incontinent struggle with how to handle accidents.
The Washington Post tells us,
"Dana invented the diaper — $32 for a pack of six, including shipping — when her previous Pomeranian, Mr. Chips, developed diabetes. "It was grit. It was determination. But mostly it was because I had to do it for Mr. Chips."
Dana's diapers fit everything from a teacup to a 100-pound wolfhound. A lot of pet owners have issues with the size and comfort of normal dog diapers. Keeping the dog diaper on is the main issue and these diapers address this with the design Dana created.
Having a list of the best dog diapers for your elderly dog is really important and will save your relationship. Comfort fit is also the biggest complaint of pet owners since they need to be worn all day in some cases. When you can find a leakproof, super absorbent doggie diaper life will become a lot easier. I've been there!
Washable diapers create more work for pet parents and disposable diapers are just a better solution overall. Belly bands are often used for male wraps when incontinence happens but sometimes they just don't fit well. I've found that a simple solution is the way to go.
Urinary incontinence is very common so don't let yourself get frustrated and always make a trip to the vet to rule out any medical issues in addition to incontinence that may be the underlying problem. Dana's brand comes in X-small and X-large and not all brands do!
Older dogs are the best! As pet owners, it's important that we research and explore all the options available so you can have total peace of mind your dog is comfortable. Be sure to use a lot of treats when you start putting these on your dog so it's a positive experience and they're easy to take on and off. If an accident happens, do the cleanup and don't worry about it! The pet diaper that provides the best comfort (you'll know) is the one to go with and make sure there is a solid outer layer as the design is important. Leaking issues can happen to both male dogs and female dogs.
It's really no different than baby diapers- they need to be durable and waterproof. In this case, they need a tail hole!
The dog diapers in this story are paw inspired!
