Roland the border collie was in need of a helping paw on a challenging hike in Manitou Springs, Colorado.
The pooch and his owner were exploring Barr Camp, a dog-friendly lodge and campsite, when they ran into trouble. Barr Trail stretches from the trailhead up to Pikes Peak, and most visitors hike the trail to reach the campsite. The 6.5-mile hike gains 3,800 ft in elevation, with the steepest climb stretching over the first 3 miles of the trail. The uphill trek typically takes between 4 and 7 hours.
The El Paso County Search and Rescue (EPCSAR) responded to a call to help the furry hiker make his way back from Barr Camp. According to their website, the nonprofit organization is "dedicated to saving lives through search, rescue, and mountain safety education."
"Our team was called out early this morning to help a four-legged hiker down from Barr Camp," EPCSAR wrote in a report on Facebook. "After being carried for many miles, Roland and his dad were extremely grateful that we were able to lend some helping hands and get them down to their vehicle safely." The rescue unit attached an adorable photo of a beaming Roland resting on a stretcher as he was escorted down the hill. What a good boy!
The post reached Roland's grandfather, who expressed gratitude for the team's assistance: "Outstanding job, thank you all for helping our son and grand dog, I'm sure Roland enjoyed the attention." The appreciative grandfather reported that Roland suffered a mild sprain and his owner carried him as far as he could before requesting assistance. Luckily, Roland has improved significantly with pain medication. Commenters chimed in with praise for the nonprofit and the smiling pooch: "12/10 good boy worth the rescue," one Facebook user wrote. "Thank you all for getting that sweet pup down the trail!!!" another commented.
