When it comes to fishing, nothing can beat using a good topwater lure. It's simply the most exciting way there is to fish, no matter what species you're targeting. The action becomes truly heart-pumping when one is targeting a toothy predator like northern pike with surface lures.
In this video, YouTuber NDYakAngler paddles his way into a backwater area of a river where he spotted a lot of baby ducks a few days prior. He comes prepared with a large, propped duck lure to try and "match the hatch," as a trout angler may put it.
You may laugh at that statement, but this guy's hunch ends up being a good one as he catches multiple large pike in one of the more exciting fishing videos we have seen in a while.
If those vicious topwater strikes didn't get your blood pumping, we don't know what will! It doesn't get much better than this when it comes to fishing a surface lure. Large fish, huge, aggressive strikes, what's not to love about that? This video serves a great reminder to always be observant when you're on the water. Many anglers might not have looked twice at a family of baby ducks in the area. It ended up being a clue to what the northerns in this spot were feeding upon.
Can we just talk for a moment about how calm this guy was through all these catches? He reacted to each one of these strikes the way I react to a spam email at work each day! Especially that first strike that happened right alongside the kayak! In the comments people were calling this guy the "Bob Ross of Fishing." You know, that's not a bad analogy. Between the strikes, this was quite the relaxing video.
It may be worth keeping a duck lure in your tackle box for the next time you notice some swimming in the area. You just never know what predators may be lurking beneath the surface waiting to target them for a meal!
