Oregon roadkill is now legal to be harvested.
It may be the punch line of many a redneck joke, but harvesting roadkill for food is now legal in Oregon.
The Associated Press reports a recent bill was signed into law by Governor Kate Brown that allows residents to salvage meat from deer and elk for food.
Oregon Live additionally reports permits will likely need to be obtained for anyone wanting to harvest meat from these otherwise wasted animals. The rules for these permits will have to be adopted sometime before January 2019. It sounds like it will be similar to rules adopted by other states.
There has actually been something of a push for making harvest of struck animals easier in recent years. Neighboring Washington made it easier for residents to harvest meat with a salvage permit last December.
Idaho and Wisconsin have also recently streamlined the process to make it easier for people to salvage hit animals.
As weird as it may sound to some, there are actually some people who are really big fans of animals struck by cars. Hey, it's better than the animal going to complete waste on the side of the road. Just make sure the animal is fresh before you take it. About 20 other states allow the harvest of meat from animals killed on the state's roadways.
