Officials confirm the first elk calf born in the state since elk were reintroduced.
Back in December of 2016 the West Virgina Division of Natural Resources reintroduced 24 elk to the state. Of those 24 elk, 6 of the cows were confirmed pregnant . Though a few cows are believed to have died shortly after the release, at least one cow has successfully carried her calf to term.
DNR officials recently posted a trail camera photo of the cow elk and her newborn calf. The group began watching the cow after realizing she had been separated from the rest of the herd.
Officials hope at least one other cow is expected to give birth soon.
The group of elk was released near the Tomblin Wildlife Management Area.
