Ford Is Working with This UK Autodrive Program to Eliminate Street Lights

In this video, Ford provides a glimpse into a future with no traffic lights.

Called Intersection Priority Management (IMP), the system uses a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system combined with a recommendation engine, offering each driver a suggested speed (in miles per hour) to avoid hitting an approaching vehicle upon reaching an intersection.

IMP would also eliminate the need for street lights and reduce sudden braking and acceleration.

"We know that intersections and traffic lights can be a real bugbear for many drivers," said Christian Ress, supervisor at Driver Assist Technologies, Ford Research, and Advanced Engineering. "With the connected car technology we have been demonstrating this week, we envisage a world where vehicles are more aware of each other and their environment, enabling intelligent cooperation and collaboration on the roads - and around junctions."

This month, the technology is being tested in the United Kingdom as part of the country's UK Autodrive program, a government program funding connected and self-driving research projects.
