Ford is recalling 1.4 million Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans due to the risk of steering wheels detaching from the steering column.
The issue is caused by loose bolts, which can fall off and cause drivers to lose control and veer off.
According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, two accidents and one injury have been reported.
"In affected vehicles, the steering wheel bolt may not maintain torque, allowing the bolt to loosen over time, and if not serviced, a steering wheel could potentially detach and lead to a loss of steering control and increased risk of a crash," said Ford in a statement.
Vehicles affected include 2014 to 2018 model year Fusions and MKZs. Of the cars, 1.3 million are based in the U.S. with the remainder sold in Canada and Mexico. The majority of them were built at a single plant in Hermosillo, Mexico with a small percentage in Flat Rock, Michigan.
To resolve the issue, Ford dealerships will replace the existing bolt or misplaced bolt with a longer one. For more information, please visit the NHTSA Recall website and enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) for the latest updates.
