The new online retailer has announced it's officially open for business.
Last week, a team of former Cabela's employees, led by Matt Highby, opened the virtual doors of Highby Outdoors for business.
After Missouri-based Bass Pro Shops purchased Nebraska-based Cabela's in 2017, Highby, the son of former Cabela's president Dennis Highby, decided to form his own business.
The company will operate out of Sidney, Nebraska, where it received grant funds to purchase and renovate office space in a local building.
"Highby Outdoors plans to raise the bar of the outdoor gear shopping experience with today's launch of its new online retail business based in Sidney," the company stated in a press release.
The new retailer's opening didn't come easily, as it had to weather a storm of legal issues early on.
Back in August, the Cabela's division of Bass Pro Shops filed a lawsuit that alleged unfair business practices, stating that owners Matt and Molly Highby received $2 million in stock grants and more than $200,000 in severance pay when they signed their noncompete agreements.
"We are pleased the court denied Cabela's motion for an injunction," Highby told the Sidney Sun-Telegraph. "Now we're just looking forward to moving on with our plan."
Matt is excited to keep the outdoors retail industry in Sidney, despite all the ups and downs that came as a result of the Cabela's merger.
"My life is the outdoors and Sidney has always been my home," he said. "I couldn't stand idly by and watch my way of life and my town fade away."
The store will only operate online for the time being, but anticipates the addition of catalog operations and retail locations.
Highby Outdoors currently offers products for hunting, firearms and shooting, fishing and boating, camping and miscellaneous knives and other tools. It plans to eventually add more merchandise categories, too.
