A Trapped whale is rescued after being entangled in a whelk buoy.
On Wednesday afternoon the whale became snared by the lines of a whelk buoy after it had been swimming off the coast for nearly a month. The trapped whale would then be released with the help of divers.
The humpback whale has been seen swimming off the South Devon Coast for almost a month when the harbormaster in Dartmouth received a call that a whale was caught in nets off Blackpool Sands at 1:30 p.m.
Divers moved swiftly to untangle the whale. In an interview, a representative from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue mentioned that they needed to take care when working around the tail, which can be a giant force when freed.
The whale was finally freed by divers around 5:30 p.m.
Director of British Divers Marine Life Rescue, Dave Jarvis, said they are trying to get just close enough to ensure the lines are completely removed.
This is a good reminder for us to be good stewards of the ocean. We must not litter, and we should graciously take care of creation in its natural state.
