Following the debut of in-car shopping dynamo Marketplace, GM has struck again, now integrating podcast services from 10-plus service providers in 1 million vehicles.
In a Thursday release, GM announced its partnership with eight news and entertainment companies to integrate its podcasting lineup in apps, accessible using the vehicle's OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi connection.
The podcasts will be integrated into 2017 and 2018 GM models, including Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system.
"By being able to add software after you've purchased the car, we're extending the (content) ecosystem that exists in the vehicle as opposed to what you bring into the car with your phone," said John McFarland, GM's director of digital experience and connected vehicles.
The podcast lineup will include a who's who of providers, including Fox Sports, USA Today, the New TYork Times, NPR One, People Magazine, Dash Radio, and the Washington Post. This setup is an excellent alternative to connecting smartphones with infotainment systems using Bluetooth or aux cables to stream live news and coverage, as the podcasts are integrated into the vehicle, saving tons of data.
