If you don't trust packages sitting on your front porch but you also don't like the idea of a delivery person coming into your house, Amazon has another option for you.
Building on its Amazon Key program, Amazon has just announced another convenient way to have packages delivered to you - using your car's trunk. General Motors and Volvo vehicle owners in select markets can now have their packages delivered using the Amazon Key In-Car service that remotely unlocks and locks the vehicle to safely and securely store packages.
The caveats to using the program is that it is only open to Amazon Prime members (membership costs just increased from $99 to $119, by the way), they must drive 2015 model year or newer GM (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC) or Volvo vehicles and they must have an active account with that automaker's subscription-based, in-car communication service.
OnStar plans range from free on all 2016 and newer GM models to $350 per year for the all-inclusive package, while Volvo On Call is complimentary for the first six months with packages starting at $200 for one year.
Using this service is as easy as downloading the Amazon Key App and then linking their Amazon Prime account with their connected car service account. After making a purchase, Amazon gives users a four-hour delivery window, and then the app gives notices when package is on its way and when it has been delivered.
Of course, Amazon Key In-Car builds on the existing Amazon Key, which uses a camera and unique keypad to allow package deliverers to open your front door to drop off the merchandise you purchased. The need for such services are in response to thieves routinely stealing packages from front porches.
