The Googly-Eyed Stubby Squid Doesn't Even Look Like a Real Creature

This stubby squid doesn't even look real. Even the scientists filming it are cracking up.

The E/V Nautilus team spends explores the ocean's depths, bringing us views of things from the undersea world that few people will ever see.

Last August, the crew filmed a stubby squid, a creature that looks more like a child's toy than a living thing.

Even though it looks like an octopus or squid, the crew say the stubby squid is more closely related to a cuttlefish. This particular "googly-eyed" specimen was filmed at 2,950 feet off the California coast line.

Apparently, this species usually is burrowed into the sediment with only its eyes poking above the sand in order to spot prey.

It's easy to think of scientists being all serious all the time. But in this situation, they're just like the rest of us. They can't help but laugh at this funny-looking sea creature that looks like it came straight out of a Disney movie.
