Fortunately, the man kicked his paddling into overdrive.
While grizzly-human contacts seem to be increasing in recent years, this encounter is more than a little unusual. A young bruin ran into the water and appeared to chase a lone kayaker.
The man was reportedly waiting for the the other crafts from a float trip he was guiding to catch up to him when the close encounter occurred. Someone in one of the rafts behind the kayaker filmed the incident. You can hear the people in the raft yelling to the kayaker as the bear approached.
Finally, he sees the grizzly swimming toward him and begins paddling like mad to escape.
The news report claimed that there was a dead elk cached on the other side of the river, which seems like a reasonable explanation for the bear's attack. The bruin was likely defending its food source when it went after the kayaker.
The encounter occurred in Squamish, British Columbia.
