Nebraska has broken the record books in 2016 with an all-time record for big game with great numbers for deer and elk harvests.
These numbers may want you to add Nebraska as a must visit location for next hunting season. 2016 is the year that the state has set records for total elk, cow elk and mule deer buck numbers.
For elk, the total harvest of both sexes was 200 animals, with 88 bulls and 112 cows. This year also saw the largest bull taken on record for one lucky hunter.
The take for deer was a stunning 58,126 animals. 46,942 of these were whitetail deer and 11,184 mulies. Of those mule deer 9,257 were bucks, surpassing the previous record of 2009.
Pronghorn antelopes were also prevalent, with 926 taken, including 781 bucks, showing the best numbers in the last seven years of surveys.
Overall it has been a banner year for Nebraskan hunters and this good news story is likely to bolster hunter interest and participation in 2017.
