The National Shooting Sports Foundation is proposing some changes to improve the National Instant Criminal Background Check System as a way to reduce gun violence.
Everyone who purchases a firearm from a gun dealer in the United States is required to pass a background check. Unfortunately, the FBI NICS database relies on the individual states to submit information on people prohibited from purchasing firearms due to criminal or mental health reasons. Some states do a better job at this than others. And, several of the perpetrators in recent mass shootings passed a federal background check despite having a prior felony conviction, a history of domestic violence, a disqualifying mental health condition or another factor prohibiting them from legally purchasing or possessing a firearm under federal law.
For this reason, the NSSF is proposing a "fix NICS" initiative to reduce gun violence in the United States without passing any new gun control laws. NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Larry Keane discusses the details of the initiative in this interview with S.E. Cupp on HLN.

What do you think? Is this initiative an effective way to reduce gun violence in the United States without any new gun control laws?
