Honda is allowing California Fit EV drivers to collect gift cards in exchange for smart energy use in a new pilot program called SmartCharge.
The program will work to alert users when vehicle charge runs low, with vehicles linking to a SmartCharge app that connects to the cloud using its telematics system and eMotorWerks' JuiceNet software to read low demand periods for electricity and charging vehicles during those times (considered "off-peak hours).
Drivers will be encouraged to charge up during those hours.
After five initial charging sessions, drivers will be reassessed every two months, rewarded up to $50 in Amazon gift cards each time.
"We believe the program will be a game changer with its ability to create new value for our customers, reduce demand on the grid during peak load times, and help contribute to our company's goal of reducing CO2 emissions," said Connected and Environmental Business Development VP Steve Center.
According to Honda, grid demand is greatest in the early evenings, when electricity is most expensive.
No word on a timetable for expanding a successful test to other electrified vehicles like the Clarity Plug-in.
