When Sereno got a chance to say goodbye to his owner at a funeral procession, he gave his owner a touching send off.
Wagner Figueiredo de Lima and his horse, Sereno, had an incredibly strong bond. The two were inseparable best friends, but a tragic traffic accident ended Figueiredo de Lima's life when the man was just 34 years old. The man's funeral procession would be Sereno's last chance to say goodbye to his rider.
Figueiredo de Lima's brother, Wando, felt that Sereno should participate in the funeral procession. But no one knew how the horse would react. When the vehicle which carried Figueiredo de Lima's coffin arrived, Sereno became agitated. The horse whinnied repeatedly, pawed, and then laid his head against the coffin. It seemed that he realized that his rider was really gone.

After Sereno said goodbye, Wando and the horse led the funeral procession to the cemetery. Sereno will be joining Wando's family, rather than being put up for sale.
Many horse owners will tell you that horses clearly grieve. If you've ever separated bonded pasture mates, then you have likely seen how horses can become agitated when their partners are taken away. Unfortunately, there's no way that we can explain death to a horse. Some owners suggest letting a horse's pasture-mate see the horse's body after he has passed, as this can help them to understand that their friend is not coming back.
When horses bond strongly with their riders, they can go through a type of grieving process when separated. It's evident from the video that Sereno is upset. Is he mourning his owner? Is he upset by the busy situation that he's in the middle of? We may never know. But if you've ever loved a horse, you know how strongly they can bond with people. It would only make sense that they can mourn just as intensely.
