Kia Recalls 500,000 Vehicles Due to Faulty Airbags

Korean automaker Kia has recalled 500,000 vehicles in the United States due to an airbag glitch.

The airbag glitch prevents airbags from being deployed in the event of a crash due to a short circuit bug affecting both driver and passenger sides. So far, there is an ongoing probe by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into six crashes and four deaths where the airbags did not deploy.

The recall covers the model year 2010-2013 Forte, the 2011-2013 Optima, the 2011-2012 Optima Hybrid, and the 2011-2012 Sedona minivan.

At the moment, Kia is working with its supplier, ZF Friedrichshafen, with no fix yet to be issued. However, Kia spokesperson confirmed a scheduled owner notification date of July 27 with a fix expected sometime before that.
