A milestone was reached in Las Vegas by Lyft and Aptiv.
Ride-hailing dynamo Lyft and autonomous hardware provider Aptiv have completed 5,000 self-driving rides in the gambling capital of the world, as reported by The Verge.
The program comprises of 30 self-driving vehicles cruising around Las Vegas, picking up and dropping off passengers at designated hot spots, hailing rides using Lyft's app. Of 75 Aptiv cars in circulation, roughly a third are operated by Lyft.
Each vehicle is manned by two human operators taking over controls in the event of an emergency.
"Hitting 5,000 consumer rides is a major milestone, not just for Aptiv and Lyft, but for the entire mobility space," said Glen De Vos, CEO of Aptiv. "This is the first-of-its-kind commercial self-driving program, and we are proud to be offering self-driving vehicles for public use today."
The program, which debuted at last January's Consumer Electronics Show, has had an overwhelmingly positive reception, with its service achieving a 4.96 out of 5-star average passenger rating, with 96 percent of riders expressing an interest in riding again.
No word on revenue implications for Lyft and Aptiv nor the number of safety incidents requiring human intervention.
