Ride-hailing giant Lyft and automotive supplier Aptiv have entered a multi-year agreement to deploy 30 self-driving vehicles in Las Vegas this summer.
Comprising of BMW 5 Series, the fleet will shuttle passengers from the Las Vegas Convention Center and other specified "high demand areas."
Rides will be hailed using Lyft's app, with each vehicle manned by a human safety driver who will operate in the event of an emergency and to move off private property.
"With Aptiv's autonomous driving technology deployed throughout Las Vegas and broadly accessible through the Lyft app, a wide range of consumers will be able to share the experience of autonomous vehicles in a complex urban environment," said Kevin Clark, Aptiv president and chief executive officer.
"More importantly, the resulting knowledge and data will allow us to further refine our autonomous driving capabilities and strengthen our portfolio of industry-leading active safety solutions."
This venture caps an explosive debut at last January's International Consumer Electronics Show, where it offered more than 400 rides to attendees, winning an average 4.99 rating out of five stars. This partnership will also oversee the expansion of new transportation options by Aptiv to reduce urban congestion, including Las Vegas' downtown area.
