This is a tear-jerker and one of our favorite stories this year! Now, my dogs used to bark at the mailman and I always thought how great it would be to live with a dog that greeted the mailman nicely and ate treats from him when deliveries were made throughout the week. Then we moved to a place where the mailman delivers mail to a box that is about two miles away so out of sight, out of mind. They no longer react to the mailman but instead bark at the UPS delivery man.
We write a lot about the good deeds mailman do for animals on their route! This story is about a mailman who delivers treats to dogs on his routes and received a tear-jerking note from a German Shepherd's owner after the dog died asking him to share the dog's remaining bones with other animals on his route in his memory.
As reported in The Dodo.com the letter shared said,
"Gretchen passed away yesterday. She asked me to ask you if you would share her treats that she never got to finish with the other dogs on your route. She always enjoyed seeing you come to the door and was always happy to get a snack from you."
At what part did you start crying? This note went viral on Twitter (of course it did).

My wife and I were told about Gretchen's letter to Fernando being on Twitter. I can't begin to tell y'all how much it has meant to us seeing how much love and support y'all have shown our girl. She was the absolute best. This is a short video of her seeing her mailman. pic.twitter.com/uK9Y2BtKtO

Gretchen, the German Shepherd, loved postal worker, Fernando Barboza. Barboza told The Dodo,
"I have a bag of treats in my mail truck. When I bring a package to somebody's door, and there's a dog there, I give them a treat. Like, if I'm bringing something for the owner, I might as well bring something to the dogs, too, since they're part of the family."
He was the first person outside of Gretchen's family that the dog started to trust after being adopted. She waited for Barboza's arrival each day and this relationship went on for years.
He proudly carried out Gretchen's final wishes,
"I still expect to see my old buddy Gretchen, but of course she's not there anymore," he said, adding that, despite her passing, in some ways she'll always be around. "To me, dogs become a part of us."
Stories about man's best friend are the best way to put a smile on your face. Dog lovers everywhere embraced this Tweet and shared it far and wide. Imagine the sound of that mail truck and how happy it made Gretchen every day. Her dying wish and heartbreaking note certainly show the unconditional love a dog brings to their humans. The Cimino family were clearly stunned that the news traveled around the internet so quickly but these stories are symbolic of what really matters! A story about an unlikely friendship and the final wish of a dog are an internet sensation!
