Malibu Creek State Park Is The Way To Do Outdoor Los Angeles

We all know that California is full of some of the best national parks in the country. But how many of those destinations can also claim to be the main shooting location for the hit tv show M*A*S*H?

Northwest of downtown Los Angeles around the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, the outdoors meets Hollywood history at Malibu Creek State Park. In addition to its status as a scenic marvel, this California state park has been used to shoot some of the most popular movies and television shows of the 20th century.

Below is everything you need to know if you're considering a visit.

Where Is Malibu Creek State Park?

Malibu Creek State Park is just south of the city of Agoura Hills, next to the popular tourist destination Calabasas. It's easiest to reach by way of Mulholland Highway or Las Virgenes Rd. But be warned that Las Virgenes becomes Malibu Canyon Road a little of South of the park, which can be a bit confusing.

Similarly, even though roads like Liberty Canyon dip into the area, they don't lead to the park entrance, so make sure to double check your coordinates before heading out.

Camping in the State Park

Campers will be happy to know that both regular campsites and group sites are available on a nightly basis. The California State Parks website at parks.ca.gov is the perfect place to go to get more information and make reservations. Make sure to book your stay well in advance, as spots are limited and demand is high.

Southern California is known for its warm weather, making this park a great place to visit year round. But considering tragedies like the 2018 Woolsey Fire, you might want to avoid the area during wildfire season. As ever, we suggest looking ahead by using trusted weather apps and websites.

Hiking Trails and More

Miles of horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking trails cross the park, leading to scenic spots like Century Lake and the Malibu Creek Rock Pools. The main trailhead is located right off the park's primary parking lot, making it easy for day hikers to head out on light treks.

Whether you're into rock climbing or bird watching, the park has something to offer everyone. Sadly, while dogs are allowed on the park's paved roads and camp grounds, they're not permitted to walk the trails with you.

A Piece of Hollywood History

In addition to homing parts of the M*A*S*H television show set, other bits of Hollywood and California history can be experienced in and around the area. For instance, a good portion of the hit 1968 movie Planet of the Apes was filmed at Malibu Creek State Park. Likewise, the Reagan Ranch that once belonged to our 40th president is located at the west end of the park.
