May 4th is International Respect for Chickens Day

On May 4th, chicken lovers and advocates across the world will come together to celebrate International Respect for Chickens Day.

Love chickens? Then spread the word: May 4th is International Respect for Chickens Day. But the celebration of our fowl friends doesn't end there: May is International Respect for Chickens Month.

International Respect for Chickens Day was begun by United Poultry Concerns in 2005. The annual day is intended to celebrate the chicken while also bringing attention to the bleak life that chickens live in farming situations.

United Poultry Concerns is a nonprofit which is dedicated to the compassionate and respectful treatment of chickens, turkeys, ducks, and other fowl. The nonprofit promotes vegan diets and lifestyle and works to raise awareness of the ways that poultry are used in society.

Chicken

United Poultry Concerns urges you to take action for chickens on or around their special day. Suggested activities include holding an office party or classroom celebration, doing a radio interview, podcast, writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, hosting a vegan open house, or just talking to others about how to help chickens.

There will also be plenty of events organized by activists all over the country.

According to Karen Davis, president of United Poultry Concerns:

"Happy chickens are cheerful birds. Chickens love the earth and sun, yet millions are sitting in filthy dark buildings on crippled legs breathing polluted air, as described in my book Prisoned Chickens, Poisoned Eggs."

There are opportunities to celebrate chickens in your own community! An informative blog post is a perfect way to educate aspiring chicken keepers.
