New Mexico has won the "Best Plate of 2017" award by the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association for its chile-themed license plate design.
The license plate features a green and red chile graphic, with yellow, red, and green lettering against a black background. Its top honors follow its 2011 win for its minimalist turquoise plate with a sun-shaped yellow and red logo.
Other finalists rounding up the top four included Hawaii's volcanic themed design, Wyoming's "cowboy silhouette," and Oklahoma's red and gray "Pioneers of the Prairie" theme. In all, 16 states were selected as finalists.
To date, more than 140,000 chile plates have been registered as of July 2017.
In an interview with KRQE News 13 in Albuquerque driver, only known as Bianca, may have said it best.
"That's the number one thing we're known for," said Blanca. "It's usually just a (hot air) balloon, but I think the chile represents the culture here."
