In this episode of YouTube channel Engineering Explained, the effectiveness of new versus worn tires is covered in great detail.
With feedback from French tire giant Michelin, the channel covers the attributes of new and used tires and how they perform, describing how tire grip works based on three categories - construction, compound, and tread pattern.
Compound grip remains the same in wet versus dry weather, with the greatest difference in performance detected with worn tread patterns, which increases the change of hydroplaning on wet roads.
According to Michelin, drivers are four times more likely to be in an accident in wet weather than dry weather, which has led to innovation in wet grip design regardless of the life of the tire with its Premier tire series. It uses silica, uniquely shape grooves and full depth, three-dimension zig-zag sites to better cut through water and provide improved feel.
