Newsweek Gives Toyota the Title of World's Greenest Automaker in its Annual Green Rankings

Newsweek's annual Green Rankings has Toyota at the top as the world's greenest automaker.

The award follows Toyota's continued development of hybrid and fuel cell vehicles and sustainability efforts. Overall, it scored 16th-place in the publications Global 500 list, with a No. 1 position amongst automakers.

"Toyota is proud to be recognized by Newsweek as the world's top green automaker and as a leader among global companies," said Jim Lentz, chief executive officer of Toyota Motor North America. "We are continually working to develop and improve technologies for our operations and vehicles. Our aim is to reduce the impact on the environment while maintaining affordability for our customers, and position our company as an industry leader in sustainable mobility."

Criteria used to assess Toyota was based on eight performance indicators around energy, waste, waste, and other criteria, using a weighted scale as measured against industry peers and publicly traded companies. The top U.S. spot overall went to Cisco Systems, which has worked aggressively to reduce greenhouse emissions by optimizing their office spaces to cut electricity use and using smart products.

Other automakers winning a spot include Daimler AG, Hyundai, Audi, and Ford, who achieved global rankings from the 68th to 79th positions, respectively.
