James Corden handed out puppies for the losers of the comedy album award at the Grammys.
But, of course, not everyone in the animal world thought it was cute.
James Corden, who hosted the 60th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night on January 28, charmed the audience with his jokes throughout the show. When it came time to announce the winner of the Best Comedy Album of the year, he surprised everyone with something else. The winner was Dave Chappelle, but the losers got something too. Corden said:
"I should say to all the nominees that who are not going home with a Grammy — I don't want anyone to be upset tonight, so the good news is nobody goes home empty-handed because all night we will be handing out consolation puppies. So if you didn't get a Grammy, you get a puppy."

While most the world thought it was very adorable (Jerry Seinfeld's happy expression with a puppy in his hands quickly became a meme) not everyone thought that handing out puppies as a consolation prize at an awards show was a very cute idea.

Obviously PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) had something to say:
Very disappointed that the #GRAMMYs chose to gift puppies as a joke. Animals are not toys. #AdoptDontBuy

But then other animal lovers chimed in, saying that handing out puppies, two named Roxy and Ruby, wasn't a very thought-out plan.
#GRAMMYs puppies
How could they give puppies away as prizes it's disgusting .shame on you ?— Ali (@Alilouise69) January 29, 2018
@GMB @PeterEgan6 horrified to see #grammys giving puppies as consolation prizes!! They aren't prizes. How is that any different to giving a puppy for Xmas? U doing all the education done over recent years ?

Runners Up at The Grammys given ?puppies to cuddle?. Hollywood just keeps on giving. You couldn?t make it up ... ??

Questions were raised like, what is happening to the puppies after the show? Weren't the puppies scared being handed around with everyone applauding and laughing all around them? And all animal lovers know that giving a puppy as a gift is very serious. Gifting puppies for fun to the runners-up is not a good message to send.
Why were the #GRAMMYs giving out puppies? I?d like to know where they ended up after the show?! A dog is not a gift, it is a life that you?ve have to treasure forever

We can assume the Grammy comedy losers, Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Gaffigan, and Sarah Silverman, didn't actually take the puppies home to Hollywood. So the question remains: did they just go back to the pound?
As cute as the stunt was, there are some bigger questions and issues raised here, like the fact that animal shelters are severely overpopulated and dogs are being euthanized at an alarming rate. Maybe some statistics should have been mentioned.
Neither the Grammys nor James Corden have responded to the puppy controversy as of yet.
