This nyala bull got into the fight of its life as it faced three dangerous predators all in one intense showdown. A pack of wild dogs had chased the buck into the water, but it got into even more trouble when it encountered the hippo and crocodile that resided there. Field guide Wayne Myburgh witnessed the entire scene while staying in Royal Malewane, the luxury Kruger Park safari lodge in South Africa, and shared how the story panned out with the ideo that was uploaded to YouTube by Latest Sightings.
"It was a usual morning drive and we heard the wild dogs had just chased a nyala bull into Quelea Dam. Knowing about the presence of a crocodile and about 12 hippos that live there we knew it could get interesting and made our way there," he said. "Obviously, on the way my adrenaline was pumping, because I knew the potential of all the outcomes this sighting could have."
There's clearly a lot going on here. The nyala was caught in a standoff unlike any other. After it retreated to the water, it still wasn't in the clear. As if the wild dogs weren't enough for the buck to deal with, a hippo attack from behind posed a real threat.
The video shows the nyala managing to successfully defend itself from the hippo by using its big, sharp horns, but the war wasn't over. After winning both battles with the wild dogs and hippo, the nyala faced yet another deadly predator: a crocodile. Unfortunately, that's where the fight was lost. The video ends with the crocodile finally taking down the nyala.
Myburgh told Latest Sightings, "After guiding for 13 years it was so awesome to experience something you have never witnessed before. Definitely always try to get some footage - but don't forget to put the camera down and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
