What ate this shark in Florida?
Perhaps it's time we just faced the facts. There's never really been a safe time to go back in the water! At least that's what some Volusia County, Florida residents might be thinking after half of a dead shark washed up on a beach.
Photos of the shark, believed to be a spinner or blacktip, were first taken by a lifeguard and quickly spread like wildfire once they hit the internet.
"It is unknown what type of predator bit the shark or how far offshore it was when it was attacked," Volusia County Beach Safety spokeswoman Tammy Morris told reporters.
Some large great white sharks have been spotted off the Florida coast recently. One of those sharks, a 14-footer named Katharine can actually be tracked online by Ocearch.
Of course, it's impossible to say what may have been responsible for the shark on the beach. The latest pings from Katharine's tag put her somewhere west of Vero Beach on February 13.
In any case, the find makes for a chilling ocean mystery that will definitely keep locals talking for a while. Anybody up for a swim?
