Hunting during the rut can be awesome, and it can also be frustrating. One of the toughest scenarios for a hunter to find themselves in is probably when a mature buck is with a doe in heat. His attention is focused on one thing. Unless that doe walks within your line of shot, it's going to be extremely difficult to divert his attention away.
This is the situation that Josh and Taylor of Clearwater Outfitters found themselves in. They are perched high in a stand with prime buck sign around them. Suddenly they spot a handsome 10-pointer, but there's just one problem: he's locked on a doe and doesn't show any signs of being interested.
Josh rallies the buck with some calling that entices the buck into range. Taylor draws back but the buck doesn't give her quite what she needs to send an arrow at him. He then turns to leave and Josh doubles down with an aggressive calling sequence. The buck comes marching back in. Josh cautions Taylor to wait.
"No, no, no," he whispers.
It's a suspenseful few moments. Finally, Taylor gets a shot opportunity. She never hesitates and sends an arrow arching perfectly down into the double lung area.
Immediately Josh erupts with excitement.
"You smoked him babe! You smoked him," he said. ""That was an unreal shot!"
Joy spreads across Taylor's face in a huge smile.
"I did it Josh," she whispered as she breaks down in joyful giggles.
It doesn't get much more exciting than this when it comes to bowhunting. It's always thrilling when a big buck responds to your calls. To have this big boy do it twice is something else altogether. That big boy was clearly very worried a rival was going to come in and steal his gal.
"This was such a cool experience," Taylor said. "The fact that you were able to call it in off that do. It was such a cool way to end that night."
