Dogfighting is one of the most heinous acts of animal cruelty. It's now banned throughout the United States and is a felony in all 50 states.
The ASPCA tells us,
"Dogfighting is a felony in all 50 states, but it continues to occur in every part of the country and in every type of community."
Pixar's latest short about dog fighting has everyone crying. Through their tears, they're talking about an adorable, brave stray cat and her friendship with a dog used for fighting.
Pixar has been releasing new animated shorts called SparkShorts and the newest release to YouTube is called, Kitbull. After only nine minutes you'll need to pull yourself together! We certainly did! (Watch in private with Kleenex).
This heartwarming story is about an unusual friendship with a very happy ending in the streets of San Francisco.
In typical Pixar fashion, no words are needed and yet the message moves you to tears.
Shortoftheweek.com said it best,
"It implies the bad stuff without viscerally relishing in it, which makes it both palatable for a wide audience while still retaining a hint of darkness and grit that is often absent in "cutesy" animation."
The director Rosana Sullivan talks about her own struggle making friends growing up. She relates to this scrappy cat!
In an interview with MyModernMet.com, she explains,
"Growing up, I was always very sensitive and very shy, and had actually a lot of trouble making connections, making friendship," Sullivan reveals in a behind-the-scenes video. "So I related to this kitten because it never really stepped outside of its comfort zone to be vulnerable and make a connection."
The stray kitten ultimately is the hero in our eyes! So brave!
The abused pit bull found a friendship that ultimately saved his life and while this short film is fiction this message is true in real life thanks to organizations like the ASPCA.
This Pixar Short takes cat videos to a whole new level (wasn't YouTube created for those of us that loved watching cat videos?).
Who doesn't love a story about unlikely friendships and an unlikely connection that saves the life of an animal! We will be watching to see what these new storytellers release in the coming months and in the interim we'll remember the story of this independent stray kitten that saves the day.
What can you do to help take a stand against dog fighting?
Do you know the unfortunate truth about what really happens when dogs are saved from dogfighting? When federal law enforcement saved these dogs and takes down a dogfighting operation, the dogs they rescue can be held for months (or years) while court cases drag on. Can you imagine how stressful this is for the dogs?
The ASPCA is helping fix this problem by ensuring that dogs rescued from fighting are moved through the system quickly with the "Passage of the HEART (Help Extract Animals from Red Tape) Act".
"This bill needs to pass the Senate and House Judiciary Committees before Congress can vote to make it law. You can make a difference: Sign our petition to the committees' leaders asking them to support the HEART Act and move the bill to a final vote."
