Atlanta's newest luxury hotel overlooking the Porsche Experience Center is offering four free drive-in movies this summer - even if you pronounce Porsche wrong.
Porsche has transformed Atlanta into an automotive enthusiast's playground with its new North American headquarters, but the new Solis Two Porsche Drive hotel is showing that the Porsche fun is a family-friendly affair. This summer, the hotel will turn its parking lot and adjacent parking garage into a Porsche-themed drive-in movie theater.
The hotel overlooks the Porsche Experience Center and its 1.6-mile test track, which makes a fitting venue to showcase a quartet of classic movies that highlight Porsches. All of the showings are on a Saturday night at 8:30, and they will be projected on a 25-foot screen with audio coming via an FM radio station.
The best part is that you don't need to be a guest of the hotel or even own a Porsche to attend!
Risky Business (1983)
Ok, maybe not all of the movies are family friendly, but who doesn't remember cringing the first time they watched Tom Cruise drive that Porsche 928 out onto the dock. You can catch Tom Cruise in his tighty whities (and Rebecca De Mornay in even less) when this movie kicks off the free drive-in series on May 19th.
Le Mans (1971)
This film might as well be a commercial for Porsche from the opening sequence to the amazingly raw and vivid action shots of this legendary endurance race. Not only is Le Mans one of Steve McQueen's best movies ever, but it is also a must-watch for any automotive and/or racing enthusiast. You can catch this one on June 9th; just don't bring your Ferrari.
Top Gun (1986)
Forget ill-advised fly-bys, flat spins and bar room serenades, Porsche fans probably best remember this movie for Charlie's Porsche 356. You know a car is historically significant when it plays a small role but is just as memorable as the F-14 Tomcats, which are the true stars of the movie. Top Gun will take your breath away at the drive-in movies on June 16.
Dream Machine (1991)
Closing out the summer drive-in series is a Dream Machine, a direct-to-video movie starring Corey Haim and a 1983 Porsche 911 SC Cabrio. Honestly, we had to look this one to see why it deserves to be included, but all we had to see was the 911 on the movie cover to understand why. You can catch this movie on July 14th.
