Rolls-Royce Names Its SUV Cullinan, Drops Photo of Rear "Tailgate" Seats

Rolls-Royce is officially naming its upcoming SUV (or high-sided car as they prefer) after a diamond taken from a South African mine in 1905: Cullinan.

As the company's press release points out, the Cullinan name was an open secret since their SUV project carried that name from the start about three years ago.

While details of the big Rolls are scant, we do know it will be built on the automaker's "all-new proprietary aluminum space frame 'Architecture of Luxury'," which also underpins the 2018 Phantom.

Surmising from photos released by Rolls-Royce, the new SUV won't just be a boulevard cruiser. One of the shots shows a camouflaged Cullinan stirring it up on a muddy hillside trail.

The latest photos also shared the "backseat," which is a bit of a stretch when you see these chairs hanging off the back.

More details will be forthcoming as we near the Cullinan's total unveiling later this year. Deliveries to well-heeled customers are expected to begin in 2019.
