There is no doubt about it, we love our big guns here in America. Most people will agree with me when they say that bigger is better. For handguns, rounds like .500 S&W, .50 AE and .44 Magnum are just a few that spring to mind. For rifles, you might be thinking of rounds like .50 BMG, .454 Casull, .460 S&W or maybe even something extreme like .577 Nitro Express if we want to start looking at powerful game rounds. However, all those rounds pale in comparison to .950 JDJ. Never heard of it? We are talking about a .95 caliber bullet that packs a heck of a punch. This round is killer on shoulders but big on fun as the video below with the SSK Industries "Fat Mac" demonstrates.
We don't care how much firearms experience you have, even the most experienced of shooters is likely to flinch a little from this firearm. The .950 JDJ round was developed by SSK Industries and Knight Rifles as a prototype. Only a handful of this gigantic rifles were made. The parent case for this rifle was originally a 20mm Vulcan round. That was a round that was normally used with the General Dynamics M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. You know, a gun that is traditionally mounted on fighter jets.
Because only a handful of .950 JDJ rifles were ever made, the bullets must be custom cast and can cost upwards of $40 a round! Suddenly, $5 a round for a .50 BMG sounds like a real deal.
Not surprisingly, this rifle failed to sell at auction. We are guessing it was a combination of not being able to afford it, but also because the practical uses for a firearm of this size are quite limited at best. Unless of course you have a time machine and plan on hunting T-Rex.
In any case, it is fun to see and probably fun to shoot in a safe (animal-free) environment, even if only one time!
