SIG aims to stake its claim in the sub-$1,000 market with this all-new AR rifle.
SIG SAUER has built its reputation on building high-quality rifles for the last 40-plus years. Now it's tapping into other markets within the firearm industry, diversifying its product lineups and also its price points. The new M400 TREAD rifle is a product of both of these strategies.
As an optics-ready, aluminum-frame rifle, the TREAD is ready to be modified out the gate. Stock, it comes with a free-floating M-LOK handguard, a Magpul SL-K six-position telescoping stock, a mid-length gas system, a single-stage polished/hard-coat trigger and ambidextrous controls.
The TREAD is chambered in 5.56 NATO.
The M-LOK free-floating aluminum handguard improves accuracy and allows for stable accessory mounting, while also keeping weight down.
The M400 TREAD features a 16-inch, stainless steel barrel, which offers long-range accuracy that can rival most of its competitors out of the box. It features a 1:8 twist rate, which lends the barrel optimal performance with lighter-grain ammunition, making it ideal for for beginner or intermediate shooters who want to shoot inexpensive ammunition.
The barrel also comes stock with a three-prong flash suppressor and a stainless-steel SIG Micro-Light Gas Block, which is actually lighter than most titanium gas blocks on the market.
Not only does the TREAD accommodate both right- and left-handed shooters, but the polished, hard-coated single-stage trigger provides a trigger pull that's smoother than military-spec triggers, which allows for more accurate shooting.
There are a number of TREAD-branded accessories shooters can easily add to this platform, too.
Those looking to cut down on weight can look into the the skeletonized TREAD M-LOK handguard, which comes in 13- and 15-inch options. Additionally, if shooters are interested in adding stability, they can go for the vertical grip kit, which allows for a forward grip that's slightly angled in your preferred direction.
Other popular TREAD accessories include the ROMEO5 1x20mm red-dot sight, adjustable flip-up sights, sight rails, the ambidextrous charging handle and the three-chamber compensator.
The TREAD currently has an MSRP of $940, which puts it on the upper end of entry-level AR rifle platforms.
