The gun has all the same features as the 9mm handgun now used by every branch of the U.S. military.
A few years ago, the U.S. military decided to retired the Beretta M9 9mm pistol, in service since 1985, in favor of the new and more modular SIG Sauer P320 pistol platform, which won the trials for the Modular Handgun System (MHS). The handgun was adopted as the M17 and a more compact M18 variant, now in use by all branches of the U.S. military.
While the P320 is available in a number of variants to civilians, the exact gun used by the military hasn't been offered, until now.
SIG has put out a limited release of the M18-Commemorative Edition of the official U.S. military service pistol, as a variant of the SIG Sauer P320. The M18-Commemorative pistol has all the same components and the same coating and markings as the military version.
The M18-Commemorative is a 9mm, striker-fired handgun with a coyote-colored carry-length grip module and a coyote-tan, PVD-coated stainless steel slide topped with the same optic cut stipulated in the MHS contract. The gun also features the military coyote-tan colored controls, an ambidextrous manual safety, and SIGLITE front night sights and removable night sight rear plate and a three-slot accessory rail on the polymer frame.
The commemorative gun ships with two 21-round magazines and a single 17-round magazine and comes in the same cardboard packaging with a slate-grey flocked foam insert used to deliver it to the U.S. Army.
Each SIG Sauer M18-Commemorative pistol features a special serial number, ranging from M18-0001 through M18-5000. With registration of the M18-Commemorative pistol, the owner will get an official certificate of authenticity and a serialized M18-Commemorative challenge coin, both featuring the same serial number as the purchased M18-Commemorative pistol.
