Were all rifles in the American Civil War inaccurate?
Well, a lot of them were. The Whitworth Sniper Rifle, however, could rival today's rifle accuracy.
Ian from Forgotten Weapons takes a look at the extraordinary Confederate Whitworth Rifle.
Sir Joseph Whitworth had an idea for a more accurate rifle. Why not build a rifle with a hexagonal rifling and then load hexagonal bullets that fit exactly into that rifling?
What came of that was an extremely accurate black powder muzzleloading rifle.
The Confederate Army purchased a small amount of these rifles for their sharpshooters. The spent projectiles have even been found on battlefields.
We'd like to thank Ian from Forgotten Weapons for sharing this incredible historical find.
