Flying car company Terrafugia has announced that the first production models of its Transition flying car will go on sale next year.
Specifications for the Transition flying car include a hybrid and electric powertrain, with an altitude speed of 100 miles per hour and 10,000 feet maximum altitude with a 400-mile range. It uses a hybrid engine with two motors mounted to the rear wheels, topping out at 65 miles per hour on land.
In transitioning from airplane to car, its wings and pusher propeller fold, with its instrument dashboard automatically swapping from airplane to car mode.
In terms of routes, it will use a small airport network, with licensed pilots using them as landing pads before driving to their final destination. No word on how the small airport network will be distributed or the distance between each location.
At the moment, there have been early efforts by startups and established brands such as Larry Page's Kitty Hawk, Uber, and Airbus to build flying car concepts, which are reaching various stages of prototyping design with plans to launch within the next decade.
No word on how much the Terrafugia Transition will cost.
