The AR-15 served as the home defense weapon of choice for one homeowner's son.
Three intruders are dead after a Broken Arrow-area homeowner's son decided to protect himself with his personal home defense weapon, an AR-15. Wagoner County officials are investigating what they're calling a triple homicide after a home invasion on Monday, March 27.
The intruders were wearing all black masks and gloves and had broken through a glass back door when the adult son met them with his AR-15 rifle. According to the spokesman for the sheriff's office, one intruder was armed with brass knuckles, and another had a knife.
Two of the intruders were juveniles and one was an adult between the ages of 18 and 19.
According to Sheriff's office spokesman Deputy Nick Mahoney, a 21-year old female is also in custody in connection with the event: she turned herself in, claiming that she dropped the intruders off before the failed burglary attempt.
Deputies received a call around 12:30 p.m. of a shooting at a residence in the 9100 block of Clearview Drive, Mahoney said.
"Upon arrival to the scene, deputies discovered three individuals deceased," he said. "Preliminary investigation indicates these three individuals showed up to this residence with the intent to burglarize it."
Mahoney said upon entering the residence that deputies encountered the son who opened fire with his AR-15 rifle. All three suspects were killed. Two were killed inside while one ran outside before he collapsed.
Neither the homeowner, who was also home, nor the son were injured. They both voluntarily went to the Sheriff's office to fill out a statement.
The preliminary investigation points to self-defense.
