The Border Patrol Found an Abandoned Duffel Bag...With a Live Tiger Inside!

This cat is out of the bag...quite literally!

Being a border patrol agent is probably a very interesting job. But some agents in Brownsville, Texas, had a Monday even more unusual than normal.

It isn't every day you find a duffel bag with a live tiger inside!

It all began when agents noticed three people trying to illegally cross the border into the U.S. One of them was carrying a large black duffel bag. When the agents approached, the three suspects returned to Mexico, but left the bag behind.

When they opened the bag, they were shocked to find a young male tiger cub unconscious but alive inside. Authorities say the cub was only a few months old.

Agents decided to turn the unusual find over to the Gladys Porter Zoo.

Further reporting by the Washington Post revealed the tiger had been tranquilized prior to being placed in the bag.

"You're not going to stuff a live tiger into a bag without an argument," Gladys Porter Zoo veterinarian Tom deMaar told the paper.

A little later after the find, Irma Chapa, the communications director for the Rio Grande Valley sector of the Customs and Border Patrol, sent out several tweets indicating the young tiger is expected to be just fine.

The Border Patrol believes the tiger was part of an international exotic animal smuggling ring. The zoo is now working to find him a more permanent home.
