Lexus has presented its six-generation ES sedan to the market, and it truly has that "wow" factor.
According to Lexus, the new ES offers "sharpened performance, class-leading active safety technology and a level of craftsmanship rarely found in this segment."
In a market where sedans are slowly losing popularity, Lexus' refresh of the ES couldn't have come at a better time. Lexus comments that the ES "will draw in those who haven't considered the brand before. Bolder styling, more dynamic performance, unique cabin materials and the latest technology add a chapter to the ES story that hasn't been told, but that all changes in 2018."
Performance
The new ES comes with an array of updates, such as its construction. It's built on the Global Architecture - K (GA-K) platform. Compared to last year's model, its 2.6 inches longer and 1.8 inches wider.
This platform allows for front-wheel drive, an all-new multi-link rear suspension, and rack-mounted electric power steering. Yoshiaki Ito, the chief test driver for Lexus, stated, "All of the upgrades to the chassis were designed to deliver a sense of comforting predictability coupled with a feeling of quick response to every movement."
The F SPORT trim integrates a few more systems, such as an adaptive variable suspension and a Sport+ mode in the Drive Mode Select system. The latter implements a new Engine Sound Enhancement, which maximizes the "natural rhythms of spirited driving."
Exterior
There are two different grille designs available—the ES 350 and ES 300h models feature a grille with vertical bars, while the ES 350 F SPORT trim integrates a blacked-out pattern with L-shaped clusters in its grille.
The hood's prominent downward slant, "fast" roofline, low stance and chiseled body create an effortlessly eye-catching appearance.
If you opt for the all-new F SPORT trim, a rear spoiler, 19-inch wheels, a lower valance and rear badging come equipped.
"The ES has always been an elegant luxury sedan," said project chief designer Yasuo Kajino. "For this generation, we have added daring design elements that challenge the traditional expectations of buyers."
Interior
The cabin of this Lexus takes cues from the Lexus Future Interior concept, which promotes a driver-centric cockpit. The display screen sits atop the center stack in a "floating" manner, and an available heads-up display projects vital information right onto the windshield—both designed to better align with the driver's line of sight.
A new touchpad controller is also equipped for easier maneuverability throughout infotainment features. The 2019 ES will be the first Lexus to implement Apple CarPlay™. It also recognizes Amazon Alexa commands.
The standard models comprise Matte Bamboo, Linear Dark Mocha and Linear Espresso wood, while the F SPORT comprises Hadori aluminum trim with wave patterns for a 3D look.
This stunning new sedan will hit the market in September. Exact pricing has not been disclosed yet.
