You need a gun that shoots really fast when trying to shoot down incoming missiles.
C-RAM is short for Counter Rocket, Artillery and Mortar. The gun in the video below is basically a land-based version of the 20mm Phalanx Close In Weapon System that the Navy on many ships to shoot down incoming cruise missiles.
It uses a 20mm M61 Vulcan rotary cannon (the big brother to a minigun) with an integrated radar-fire control system. With a rate of fire of 4,500 rounds per minute (75 rounds per second), it's capable of shooting down mortar and artillery rounds as well as rockets.

The American and British Armies have used the C-RAM to protect installations in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
