Toyota says it's working on a replacement for its retro-styled FJ Cruiser.
At the 2018 North American International Auto Show, Toyota's North America CEO Jim Lentz told Motor Trend, "There's room for an authentic small off-road SUV. ... But we're getting a lot of requests from folks who want another FJ or some variant."
We assume the company has also seen how popular the Jeep Wrangler is as well as how well the redesigned Wrangler JL was received at the show. As one of the world's top-selling automakers, Toyota would certainly want a piece of that market.
Toyota showed off the FT-4X concept, an FJ Cruiser-like concept to the New York show last year, but Lentz says if that makes it to production, it will more than likely be marketed alongside the RAV4.
Instead, the FJ Cruiser replacement Toyota is working on would be for "truly going off-road. This would not be all-wheel drive for safety, this would be four-wheel drive with ground clearance," Lentz told Motor Trend.
Exciting news for offroaders from Toyota, and we look forward to what the Japanese automaker delivers.
