The benefits of adding green tripe to your dog's diet are endless. Some of the biggest reasons to feed your pups this super food include reversing weight gain, illness recovery, tricking picky eaters (our staff lives with a few picky dogs!), easing sensitive stomachs, and maintaining good dental health.
According to the blog, Home Alive Pets, you should look for tripe from "grass-fed" or "free-range" animals and while fresh is best, you can look for canned tripe. Be aware that some digestive enzymes and probiotics sensitive to heat may be lost in the canning process. Green tripe can also be freeze-dried and there are tripe treats, too.
Solid gold and Tripett have canned versions that can be found at specialty pet stores. Some pet owners with older dogs that are picky eaters feel strongly that the nutritional benefits are essential to keeping their dog's immune systems in check.
Older dogs have less beneficial bacteria and green tripe is loaded with Lactobacillus Acidophilus, a good bacteria. Seniors also benefit from essential fatty acids and can have more sensitive digestive systems.
So what is it? Dogs Naturally Magazine tells us,
"Tripe is the stomach of a ruminating (grazing) animal including cows, buffalo and sheep. The unique stomachs of ruminants have four chambers which systematically break down grasses with a slew of digestive enzymes, gastric juices and amino acids.
The same digestive enzymes and beneficial bacteria that help the ruminant animal digest foodstuff will do the same for your dog."
The only downside is the smell! Green tripe (canned, too) just has a very pungent smell, but dogs think it's wonderful and wouldn't you do anything for your best friend?
Why should dogs eat tripe?
This food contains plenty of enzymes, good bacteria, and nutrients that are excellent for your dog's health.
Probiotics and digestive enzymes are the two biggest reasons pet parents feed tripe to their dogs. Our staff has experience feeding canned tripe to a senior dog who is extremely picky with Irritable Bowel Disease and now licks his plate. And probiotics help with his digestive issues.

Why green tripe instead of supermarket tripe?
Green tripe is the untreated contents of a grazing animal's stomach or intestines and is different than tripe treated for human consumption! So don't run out to the supermarket but instead head to a local pet boutique and ask what they have available.
