Pickup drivers take note: Tailgate theft declined last year, but you might still want to watch your backs.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau says in a recent report that the number of tailgate thefts reported to insurance companies fell to 1,788 last year.
That's a drop of almost 5 percent. Not a huge decrease, but at least a downward trend.
Texans had the highest number of reported tailgate claims from 2016 to 2017 at 1,360. Californians reported the second highest number those years with 1,039. That's 65 percent of the nation's total.
But NICB's report wasn't good news for everyone. Nevadans saw a 245 percent increase in thefts in 2016-17, and South Carolinians a 118 percent increase.
Cities with the most insurance claims for tailgate theft in 2016-17 were Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Los Angeles and Fresno, California.
