Uber and Toyota have agreed to partner up on self-driving vehicles.
The agreement would install Toyota's self-driving Serra Minivans on Uber's network, integrated with Uber's own autonomous driving system. Both brands are looking to introduce it to the wild in 2021 with a small pilot program.
"The deal is the first of its kind for Uber and signals our commitment to bringing world-class technologies to the Uber network," said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. "Our goal is to deploy the world's safest self-driving cars on the Uber network, and this agreement is another significant step toward making that a reality."
In a separate transaction, Toyota has invested $500 million in Uber, amidst ongoing competition that has paired automakers with technology companies - most notably Waymo's partnership with Chrysler and Jaguar Land Rover.

Before Uber, Toyota has worked aggressively to lead in the space with a $1 billion investment in the Toyota Research Institute artificial intelligence lab and the e-Palette concept launch, which promises to self-drive pizza to your door. It will debut during the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic games.
