Vintage Footage of Pole Fishing for Tuna Nearly 50 Years Ago

Before the long nets and fancy GPS systems, this is how they fished for tuna!

This vintage tuna footage is as cool as it gets. In the old days they used to use poles with nothing but hooks on them to fill a boat full of thousands of pounds of tuna.

If you are a recreational fisherman or have fished commercially, then you will find this video quite interesting!

It is awesome how the captain used the dolphin and most likely birds to spot the schools of tuna. Once they had a good reading on them they would throw in some chum to get the fish into a frenzy. After that, the fish would literally eat anything the they dropped into the water; including a bare hook.

Unfortunately this practice has evolved into a method of commercial fishing that has decimated the tuna populations. Some say that the numbers are so low they will never return back to their historical natural balance.
